Trump gains momentum for the GOP nomination after winning the New Hampshire primary handily
With his win against Republican opponent Nikki Haley, Donald Trump is getting closer to facing Joe Biden again in the US election.
Following his commanding victory in New Hampshire’s first in the nation primary on Tuesday, Donald Trump moved one step closer to a rematch with US Democratic President Joe Biden.
Minutes after the state’s polls closed, US media declared that Trump would defeat Republican opponent Nikki Haley by a wide majority, delivering a devastating setback to her campaign.
Although the official results are still pending, predictions with roughly 50% of the votes counted showed Trump leading by double digits.
The former president’s overwhelming triumph solidified his lead in the competition for the Republican presidential nominee ahead of November’s general election, and it came after a similarly impressive performance in last week’s Iowa caucuses.
As Trump has done, no presidential contender in history has ever won the first two games on the presidential race calendar and failed to secure the nomination of his party.
The narrative around New Hampshire was that it was Haley’s final, best opportunity to cut into Trump’s enormous margin. However, the former UN envoy declared in a speech on Tuesday night that she intends to carry on with her campaign in spite of her defeat.
This race is not yet finished. After Trump won the New Hampshire primary, she addressed a gathering of supporters, “There are still dozens of states to go.” We received nearly half of the vote today. We’re not quite there yet, but we’re making progress.
She publicly conceded that she had lost the primary in New Hampshire, but she also criticized Trump’s suitability for government and his prospects of defeating Biden.
