Court Case against Provost and 14 Students for Beating Tofazzal to Death in DU
A case has been filed against former provost Professor Shah Md. Masum and fourteen students for beating Tofazzal Hossain to death in Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall of Dhaka University.
Asma Akhter (30) is a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate and Tofazzal’s cousin. He brought this lawsuit before Aktaruzzaman’s court.
Muhammad Jalal Miah, Abdus Samad, Shahriar Kabir Shovan, and Mehdi Hasan Imran from the Physics Department; Suman Mia from the Soil, Water, and Environment Department; Feroz Kabir from Botany; Mottakin Sakin Shah and Rashed Kamal Anik from the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science; Fazle Rabbi and Ahsanullah from Mathematics; Al Hussain Sajjad from the Geography and Environment Department; Wajibul Alam from Oceanography; Yamus Zaman from the Pharmacy Department and Mohammad Sultan from the Zoology Department are the other accused.
On September 19, a murder case was filed in this incident at the Shahbag police station. Because of this, the investigation into the prior case is continuing, and the current case’s proceedings have been halted in accordance with Section 205D of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The university administration sent Tofazzal to Shahbag police station rather than the hospital after he had been tortured for approximately five hours. Tofazzal passed away prior to being sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to them.
