Severe flooding in Spain: death toll rises to 95

Unprecedented flooding in eastern Spain. The death toll has risen to 95. Many people are still missing. Heavy rains started in eastern and southern regions of the country from Tuesday. At least 304 mm of rainfall was recorded in a few hours. A maximum rainfall of 320 mm was recorded at some places. Which is equal to the average rainfall of those regions in a month.

Heavy rains have created dire conditions in and around Valencia province. Large areas were flooded. Roads are submerged. The house collapsed. Thousands of people have taken shelter on the roof. Severely damaged communication system. Many important bridges have collapsed.

More than 1,000 soldiers have been deployed with the emergency department for rescue operations. However, the rescuers are unable to enter many areas due to the destruction of the roads. There are also severe power outages across large areas.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning following the massive loss of life in Spain’s worst disaster in recent memory. 150 people died in the 1973 flood in the country.
