At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away in her Scottish home, Balmoral.
Early this afternoon, at 6:30 p.m. UK local time, Buckingham Palace declared, “The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral.”
After canceling an appointment with the Privy Council on Wednesday, the longest-serving monarch in British history became sick earlier on Thursday.
Those members of her family who had not already arrived in Balmoral hurried to the site.
According to a statement from Buckingham Palace, her heir, Prince Charles, who is currently King Charles III, and his consort wife Camilla would stay in Balmoral and leave for London early the next day.
