Super typhoon ‘Man-E’ hits the Philippines

November 17, 2024 – Manila, Philippines: Early this morning, Super Typhoon “Man-E,” one of the year’s strongest storms, made landfall in the eastern Philippines, bringing with it devastating winds, heavy rains, and extensive floods. With sustained winds of 220 km/h (137 mph) and gusts up to 270 km/h (168 mph), the typhoon was categorized as a Category 5 storm.

Thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed as the storm first struck the province of Eastern Samar before tearing through the central areas, including Leyte and the Samar Islands. Emergency response activities have been made more difficult by reports of power outages and communication disruptions in several provinces.

In low-lying areas, heavy rains have resulted in serious flooding, drowning entire villages in many places. Residents have had to evacuate to rooftops for safety due to overflowing rivers. Food security in the upcoming months is at risk due to the destruction of agricultural fields, which are an essential lifeline for rural people.
